Shoummo K. Acharya

Mr. Shoummo K Acharya, Founder, Managing Director and CEO of VI eTrans Pvt Ltd. is one of the most active leaders in the field of transportation infrastructure and logistics. A chemical engineer from Jadavpur University and alumnus of Templeton College, Oxford, Shoummo has a formidable reserve of experience in petroleum products, advertising, public relations, transportation, freight forwarding, concept creation & promotion and information technology. He started his career with Indo-Burma Petroleum in sales of petroleum product and as Head of Sales in its Head Office, worked in close collaboration with Govt and petroleum industry and initiated a number of measures for petroleum industry. Shoummo then moved to head public relation and advertising in IBP-Balmer Group. In 1985 Shoummo took over the freight forwarding division and was responsible for initiating turn-around of logistic activity of Balmer Lawrie, before he moved to United Kingdom to set up Balmer Lawrie's UK division. In 1994 he came back to the country as the Managing Director of Indian Container Leasing Co. Ltd.
Shoummo converted his dream into reality by creating VI eTrans and launched its commercial operations in mid 2002 and in a matter of little over 4 years is changing the way logistics is handled in Indian Industry. It has already enrolled blue chip companies like Maruti, Hindalco, Honda-siel, Tata Steel, Balco, Grasim, Sterlite, ITC, etc as its dedicated customer. The system envisages creation of a shared infrastructure to provide information on truck movement including in-plant delays for loading/unloading and transit period and introduction of performance enhancement and monitoring tools and a freight exchange, to improve transport efficiency.
With rich experience in transportation infrastructure and logistics, Shoummo, a charter member of TIE and the President of the Kolkata chapter, has addressed several CII sessions on the subject. He is currently a member of the Working Group of the Planning Commission of India, to consider issues relating to logistics in the 11th Plan.

Desmet joined Tele Atlas in 1998 as a project manager for Scandinavia and Australia, responsible for the on-going development of the company's digital map of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland and for coordinating support for Sensis, Tele Atlas' map partner in Australia. He was later promoted to business development manager, and managed various new coverage projects in Europe, Singapore and Hong Kong. Desmet became a director of the company in 2002, responsible for business development, operations and sales related to new coverage development in Russia, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia and Malaysia. Before his permanent assignment in Asia, he was the director of AMEA New Markets and initiated digital map coverage of Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Indonesia.
Before joining Tele Atlas, Desmet was a research associate with the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Leuven in Belgium. He was also a consultant with the Policy Research Corporation in Belgium and has managed agricultural development projects and programs in Zimbabwe and Uganda. Desmet holds an M.SC. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Leuven in Belgium and a Postgraduate degree in Economics from the University of Grenoble in France. |

Sylvain Leroy joined Pole Star in 2004 where he spent one year in the R&D team of Pole Star’s headquarters in Toulouse, France.
